What to wear to a Toronto bottomless brunch

Bottomless brunch in Toronto means patios, long tables, three hours of mimosas and a walk afterwards. Here's how to dress for all of it, season by season.

Why brunch outfits are harder than they look

Bottomless brunch sounds simple until you're standing in front of your closet at 10:40 for an 11:30 reservation. It's a daytime event, so going-out dresses can feel like too much. It's also a social event that will end up on someone's Instagram story, so leggings and a hoodie feel like too little. And unlike dinner, brunch rarely ends when the bill arrives — in Toronto it usually turns into a walk down Ossington, a second stop on a patio on King West or a wander through Kensington Market.

So a good brunch outfit has to do four things at once: look put-together in daylight, survive two to three hours of sitting at a long table, handle whatever the weather is doing that day, and still be comfortable to walk in afterwards. Everything below is built around those four rules.

Rule one: dress for the chair, not the mirror

The biggest brunch mistake is choosing something that looks great standing up and feels terrible sitting down. Brunch is mostly sitting. Tight bodycon dresses ride up on banquettes, low-rise anything digs in after eggs benedict, and stiff fabrics crease the second you sit.

Look for shapes that give you room through the middle: shirt dresses, pleated skirts, A-line silhouettes and anything with a bit of movement. The Collared Button Shirt Dress is our go-to here because it reads polished — collar, buttons, clean lines — while being forgiving through the waist. Belt it if you want more shape, leave it loose if you're planning on the waffles.

The Soft Pleat Day Dress does the same job with a softer, more romantic feel. Pleats are your friend at brunch: they move when you walk, they don't cling when you sit, and they hide the fact that you had the second mimosa and the hash browns.

Rule two: plan for the after-brunch walk

Toronto brunch culture is walking culture. Whether you're heading from Leslieville to the beach, or from a Queen West patio to Trinity Bellwoods, assume you'll be on your feet for at least an hour afterwards. That means two things: shoes you can actually walk in, and an outfit that works with them.

Clean white sneakers are the brunch MVP. They work with shirt dresses, pleated dresses and skirts, and they instantly make a dressier piece feel relaxed. If you want something a bit more elevated, a low block heel, loafers or a flat sandal in summer all walk well.

A skirt is the most flexible option of all. The Button Slit Denim Skirt pairs with a fitted tee and sneakers for a casual brunch, or a bodysuit and heeled boots if brunch is turning into a day party. The slit gives you stride, which matters more than people think when you're keeping up with friends.

Rule three: dress for the season you're actually in

Toronto weather is the real dress code. The same outfit doesn't work in April and July, and a patio in May can be sunny one minute and freezing the next when the wind comes off the lake.

    Spring (April to early June)

Patios open before it's truly warm. Layering is everything. A dress with a jacket you can take off is better than a heavy sweater you'll be stuck in. The Tweed Blazer + Skirt Set is made for this: wear the full set for a polished look, or the blazer over a day dress when the sun goes behind a cloud.

    Summer (mid-June to early September)

Hot, humid and sometimes stormy. Go light and breathable, and skip anything that will show sweat on a sun-baked patio. Day dresses, the denim skirt with a tank, or the Pleated Golf Dress for a sporty, clean look that holds up in heat. Bring sunglasses and sunscreen — patio umbrellas never cover everyone.

    Fall (September to November)

The best brunch season in the city. Knits come back, and boots replace sandals. A rib knit dress with knee-high boots and a trench is the classic Toronto fall brunch look. The Mockneck Rib Knit Dress is warm enough on its own for a sunny October day and layers under a coat when it isn't.

    Winter (December to March)

Brunch moves inside, which means warm restaurants and cold walks in between. Wear the knit dress with tights and boots, and save your bigger coat for the trip there. Avoid anything you'd need to keep on at the table.

Rule four: make it photo-ready without trying

Brunch photos are almost always taken from across a table, in daylight, from the waist up. That's where details matter: a collar, an interesting neckline, a texture like tweed or rib knit, or a colour that pops against a white tablecloth. You don't need a statement dress — you need one interesting thing above the table.

Simple accessories go a long way. Gold hoops, a structured mini bag that sits on the table without taking up space, and a pair of sunglasses for the patio. Skip anything big that gets in the way of eating, like oversized sleeves that end up in the hollandaise.

Three brunch outfits that always work

If you want a shortcut, these are the combinations we come back to again and again:

    1. The easy classic: Collared Button Shirt Dress, white sneakers, gold hoops and a small shoulder bag. Works from spring to early fall.
    2. The day-party: Button Slit Denim Skirt, a fitted bodysuit or crop, heeled boots and a cropped jacket. For brunches that turn into something louder.
    3. The polished one: Tweed Blazer + Skirt Set with loafers and a slim belt bag. For birthday brunches, bridal showers and anything with a group photo.

And if you're coming straight from a morning workout, don't stress. Keep your bike shorts and sports bra on, throw the denim skirt over the shorts and a blazer on top, and change your shoes. Our gym to dinner guide goes deeper on that.

A note on fit and ordering ahead

If you're buying something new for a specific brunch — a birthday, a shower, a reunion — order at least a week ahead. Orders are processed within one to three business days, and your delivery estimate is shown at checkout. Try it on with the shoes you plan to wear, sit down in it, and walk around the block. If it doesn't feel right, unworn pieces with tags can be returned within 30 days.
